Eyelid Surgery - what you need to know
It’s one of the most common procedures done (the second most common in North America after a nose job) however little is known about eyelid surgery. Also referred to as an eyelift or blepharoplasty, this procedure reduces bagginess from lower eyelids and removes excess skin from the upper eyelids.
One of the first indicators of aging is often around the eye area. Over time, eyelids begin to droop, giving the appearance of tiredness. This surgery can counteract this process, and can also change the look (and feel) of eye traits you may have inherited from birth. The results are natural looking and scars are hidden, giving patients an improved look without anyone knowing they’ve had surgery. Eyelid surgery is common with both men and women.
It’s important to note that eyelid surgery is not just cosmetic. This surgery can also have a practical application from eliminating the overhanging skin on the upper eyelid allowing for improved peripheral vision. Many people can benefit from both upper and lower lid surgery, however not every person is in need of both. The results of eyelid surgery are immediate, but in most cases it takes up to a year to achieve the final appearance as the skin, muscle and surrounding tissue settle into place.
The procedure itself can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation and the recovery time is a few weeks, depending on the patient. Stiches can be removed as soon as seven days following and patients will want to ensure they give their eyes substantial rest for the first week. Returning to work and regular activities such as exercise will vary, but within a few weeks is average.
The pleasing results from eyelid surgery can create a new look and feel around the eye area giving back a more youthful, and well rested, appearance.
